The air inside the Gray Garrison grew heavier as the heroes pressed deeper into its defiled heart. Having secured the main hall, they turned northward, determined to clear the ground floor before daring the ascent. Their caution proved wise—waiting in the shadows was a squad of Deskari cultists led by a cunning tiefling alchemist whose hands gleamed with flasks of sickly green fire. The ensuing battle was fierce and frantic, echoing through the stone corridors with the clash of steel and the hiss of acid. When the smoke cleared, the cultists lay dead, and among their leader’s quarters the party discovered a weapon of deep personal meaning: Irabeth’s family sword, taken from her long ago and wrapped in a mocking note signed by one “Othirubo.” With grim satisfaction, the sword was returned to its rightful bearer.
In the northern wing, a beam of radiant light pierced through the grime, illuminating a section of burrito wall. Speaking the passphrase carved into the defiled shrine below—“Let us inherit Thine arms, Iomedae”—revealed a hidden door that groaned open to expose a secret armoury, its racks heavy with blessed cold iron. It was a holy cache untouched by demonic hands, a reminder that even here, the light of Iomedae still endured.
Fully clearing the ground floor, the heroes climbed the stairs to the first level. The moment their boots touched the landing, the ambush was sprung—a full squad of tieflings lying in wait. But this time, the party came prepared. Rurik Ironshield, now in towering bear form, led the charge as spells and arrows flew in tandem. The fighting raged through the stairwell and into the adjacent war room, drawing in Deskari cultists from nearby chambers and even a raging schir demon that smashed its way into the melee. When the last fiend fell, the party found themselves standing amidst maps and dispatches detailing demonic army movements across the Worldwound—priceless intelligence for the crusade, but a secondary concern for now.
Bloodied yet resolute, the heroes stood among the wreckage, knowing the true prize—the corrupted shard of the Wardstone—still waited above. The first floor’s corridors stretched before them, dim and foreboding, as the final ascent loomed ever closer.
