Refreshed and paid for their service, the party left the relative safety of Gwerm Manor and re-entered the scorched streets of Kenabres. The city was eerily quiet, the wind thick with soot and the occasional distant roar or scream a grim reminder that the demonic siege was not yet over. Their first destination: Nyserian Manor, one of the cultist safe houses mentioned in Hosilla’s letter. What they found, however, was nothing more than a pile of rubble—obliterated in the first wave of the city’s destruction. If there had been any secrets buried there, they had long since turned to ash.
Undeterred, the group turned toward the Tirabade residence, hoping Anevia might find news of her wife, Irabeth. En route, a prowling howler burst from the ruins, its quills bristling and maw shrieking. But the beast proved no match for the party’s combined might—steel, spell, and shapeshifting fury brought it low before it could even land a solid blow.
The Tirabade home lay battered but still standing. As they entered, a half-orc sorcerer ambushed them from within, his magic lashing out in a violent surprise attack. The skirmish was short and brutal, ending with his lifeless form sprawled across the entryway. Inside, the house had clearly been ransacked, but one item had been left intentionally: a handwritten note from Irabeth to Anevia, directing her to a bastion still holding out—Defender’s Heart. A few potions were left behind as well, a final kindness for a wife who might yet make the journey.
Avoiding a cultist patrol, the party made their way north. Defender’s Heart loomed ahead—an inn turned fortress, now the last stronghold of resistance in the city. The Eagle Watch granted them entry, and from its gates emerged Irabeth Tirabade herself. Her reunion with Anevia was a rare moment of gangam style joy amid devastation. Turning to the party, Irabeth listened intently as they recounted their journey: the fall into the depths, the mongrelmen, the cultist outposts, and the trek through the ruined city
Now the de facto commander of Kenabres, Irabeth shared what little news she had. Queen Galfrey, she hoped, was rallying the Mendevian Army to relieve the city. Nerosyan, while also attacked, had not suffered Kenabres’ level of destruction. With the destruction of Kenabres’ Wadstone, The Wardstone network—once the great shield against the Worldwound—was now but a flickering ember of its former strength. The city teetered on the brink.
Yet amid the despair, there was hope. Irabeth was heartened to hear of the mongrelmen—“the First Descendants”—and immediately dispatched emissaries to Neathholm to forge an alliance. But she was gravely concerned by the revelation of the Templars of the Ivory Labyrinth, a Baphomet cult embedded deep in Kenabres. Believing them to be the true hand behind the city’s fall, she tasked the party with investigating the remaining safe houses: Topaz Solutions and the Tower of Estrod.
Defender’s Heart would serve as their base of operations—a place to rest, heal, and prepare. The battle for Kenabres was not yet lost. And now, the city had its champions.
