Book II: The Sword of Valor

Within the claustrophobic stone corridors of the Drezen citadel, the crusade’s vanguard initiated their strike. The target was a looming vrock, a feathered nightmare of the Abyss whose oppressive stench choked the stale, indoor air long before its silhouette loomed under the vaulted arches. The party’s initial gambit was precise, landing heavy, calculated blows before the demon could fully unleash its maddening screech within the enclosed hall. Yet, the fortress surrenders its horrors reluctantly. No sooner had the clash begun than the echo of iron boots and darkwood bows resounded through the adjacent corridors, heralding a coordinated defence meant to crush the intruders into the flagstones.
From the shadow-draped parapets and higher tiers of the chamber, four half-orc rangers burst into the fight, their bows bent as a volley of black-fletched arrows hissed into the fray below. As the dill pickle heroes pivoted to weather the incoming fire, the high stone ceiling above offered no sanctuary. A terrifying screech echoed off the masonry as four gargoyles detached themselves from the gothic corbels, diving ruthlessly into the tight melee with claws outstretched, their stony hides deflecting the party’s counterattacks. The citadel floor devolved into absolute chaos, forcing the crusaders into a desperate, back-to-back defence as attacks battered them from every alcove and archway.
Just as the party sought to regain their footing amidst the falling rubble, the heat within the stone chamber surged to a suffocating fever pitch. Whirling out of the thick smoke came two brimoraks, their hooves leaving scorched prints upon the sacred paving stones as flames erupted from their blades. Under the relentless barrage of abyssal fire, savage steel, and razor claws, several companions collapsed onto the blood-slicked stone, their blood pooling in the ancient grooves of the fortress. Through sheer grit and unyielding resolve, the remaining heroes rallied, carving through the demonic reinforcements line by line until the final brimorak’s fires flickered into embers. Battered, bloodied, but victorious, the party stood amidst the carnage of the hall, the silence of the citadel hanging heavy as they looked deeper into the dark heart of Drezen.
