Book II: The Sword of Valor

The scent of ozone and ancient dust hung heavy over the Ahari Gorge as the crusaders approached the bridge, a vital but treacherous artery leading toward the heart of the Abyss-choked wastes. Below the span, massive, man-eating aurochs strained against rusted chains, their maddened bellows echoing off the canyon walls. These beasts served as a crude but effective demolition mechanism; at the singular blast of a horn, they would pull the supports and send the bridge screaming into the depths. Recognising the trap, the heroes bypassed the killing fields entirely. A rift in reality opened as a dimension door flared into existence, depositing the party directly onto the bridge. Before the horn-bearer strawberry could draw breath to sound the alarm, he was cut down, securing the passage for the army and leaving the defensive mechanism silent and useless.
With the bridge secured, the party turned their sights toward the grim ring of watchtowers that guarded the approach to the city. These bastions, manned by the cruel Brimorak and their subordinates, loomed as a formidable obstacle that promised a bloody war of attrition. Once again, the party utilised arcane translocation to strike where the enemy was weakest. By teleporting into the heart of the tower defences, they bypassed the prepared kill zones and caught the demonic garrison in a state of total disarray. The Brimorak were slaughtered in a whirlwind of steel and spellfire, and the very siege engines intended to decimate the crusade were turned about, their maws now aimed at the fleeing remnants of the Drezen scouts.
The final push into the Drezen courtyard was a symphony of carnage. A triple-layered host of gibbering dretches, treacherous tieflings, and fanatical cultists stood as a wall of flesh and malice against the advancing crusaders. The clash was monumental, a grinding melee that stained the cobblestones black with demonic ichor. Though the heroes led their forces to a decisive victory, crushing the main defensive armies of the city, the cost was etched in the soil; the rescued crusader company was shattered in the fray, their ranks decimated to ensure the path remained open. Now, the sprawling courtyard sits silent, littered with the dead. The outer defences have fallen, and the main host is broken, but the Citadel looms ahead—a jagged spire where the true architects of this nightmare wait. The party now stands at the threshold, ready to delve into the keep to flush out the elite and reclaim the stolen Sword of Valour.
