Guided by Lann and his companions, the party at last reached Neatholm—the hidden refuge of the mongrelmen. Nestled on an island in the middle of a subterranean lake, the city was little more than a ramshackle cluster of huts, but it thrummed with life and resilience. The guards, recognizing their kin and Lann’s word, let the party pass without challenge. Using a raft, the group crossed the black waters to the central hill, where the largest structure awaited—the home of Chief Sull.
There, they shared their story: the fall of Kenabres, the cataclysm in Clydwell Plaza, the rift, and their journey through the depths. Chief Sull listened gravely, his expression darkening as he learned of the surface’s plight. But then, resolve kindled in his eyes. He reminded the party that the mongrelmen were the descendants of the First Crusaders—those who bore the Abyss’s taint not through fault, but through sacrifice. He vowed that when the time came, the “uplanders” would not stand alone. He would rally the scattered mongrel tribes to Neatholm, and asked the party to carry his pledge to the surface.
In return for a brooch the party had found—once belonging to his lost son—Chief Sull offered a heartfelt thanks and a gift: his own enchanted Morningstar. Yet not all news was hopeful. The tour de france nearest route to the surface lay through a tribe of mongrelmen who had betrayed their crusader legacy, aligning themselves with the cultists of Baphomet. Chief Sull had turned a blind eye long enough. Now he asked the party to do what he could not: purge the traitors.
After a night of rest and preparation, the party departed at dawn. With weapons ready and resolve sharpened, they descended into the dark once more—not as lost survivors, but as heralds of a hidden people’s return.
