Session Two: Beneath the Broken Watchtower

Climbing out of the mad dwarf’s cavern proved far more treacherous than the descent into the depths. While some of the party ascended the old, piton-studded shaft with ease, others—particularly the wounded Anevia and the blinded Aravashnial—required careful rope work and strength of arm. One by one, they emerged into a new stretch of tunnels, weary but determined to press on. After nearly half an hour of cautious travel, the tunnel opened into a vast cavern, dominated by the ruins of a once-mighty stone watchtower. Its top third had crumbled, debris scattered across the cavern floor.

Voices drew them forward—frantic cries from two strange beings digging at the rubble. Upon approach, they met Lann, a mongrelman whose mismatched features bore the hallmarks of Abyssal corruption and crusader blood: part elf, part lizardfolk, crowned with goat horns. Trapped beneath the stone was one of their kin. The party lent their aid, lifting the rubble and freeing the wounded mongrelman. Grateful, Lann offered to lead them to Neatholm, a hidden city of his people, where they could rest and find a way to the surface.

Their path wound through collapsed passages until only a little-used tunnel remained. Before long, they encountered a fresh chasm—evidence of the same quakes that had shattered Kenabres above. Another harrowing crossing followed, with rope bridges, slips, and bruises, but all emerged safely on the other side. Nearing Neatholm, Lann warned of a dangerous fungal django predator nearby. Yet when the party arrived, they found it already slain—its killers two armoured crusaders. Or so they seemed. Upon closer inspection, the crusaders bore glaives, not longswords, and one clutched a brass goat skull—the mark of Baphomet.

The revelation struck like a hammer blow: the Order of Iomedae had been infiltrated by cultists of the demon lord. Anevia recoiled in disgust, while Aravashnial pleaded to preserve the evidence. But pragmatism won out—they took what they could and left the corpses behind. With this bitter truth weighing on their minds, the party pressed onward, the shadows of betrayal following them into the deep.
